West Point Class of ’72 – 2021 Mini Reunion

With the 2019 Mini-Reunion in Nashville behind us, and the 2020 Mini Reunion pushed back to same time in 2021, we need to start thinking about the upcoming Mini-Reunion in Park City, Utah. It is scheduled again on our Wednesday thru Sunday format so it will begin Wednesday, August 25, 2021 thru Sunday, August 29, 2021.

Access the latest information on West Point activities through our portal to WPAOG.

Why Park City?

Park City and Utah – Plenty to see and do. A small group of us still had a "mini" Mini Reunion this past August culminated with a Saturday dinner on the Rauk's deck. If our experience in 2020 was any indication, be ready to enjoy your time in Park City!

For our seventh/eighth mini-reunion, we have another great location – Park City, Utah. It’s a little over a 45-minute drive from the Salt Lake City Airport to Park City, an old mining town nestled in the Wasatch Range, part of the greater Rocky Mountains.  The elevation is 7,000 ft, and the average high temperature for August is 79 degrees Fahrenheit; the average low temperature for August is 49 degrees.

The area is spectacular for outdoor activities: hiking, mountain biking, zip lining, fly fishing, horseback riding, alpine slides, and even hot air balloons.  We will organize a kayak paddle in one of the nearby reservoirs as well.  Park City Mountain is the ski area just outside the town, and it is now owned by Vail Corporation.  Information about how to access all the summer activities on Park City Mountain will be available when we arrive. Numerous other locations throughout the area also offer outdoor activities, so there’s no excuse for not getting out to enjoy the great outdoors.

Park City got its start in the mid-1800s as a mining town.  By the 1950s the town was almost a ghost town, since the various ores had been mined out.  But the few remaining miners decided to invest in the growing sport of skiing, and in 1963 the ski resort was opened.  The rest is history: today Park City, with a population of 8,000, hosts 3 million tourists a year.  The 2002 Winter Olympics were held in Park City, and the Utah Olympic Park is within a short distance of our hotel.

The town itself presents a wide range of opportunities: Main Street, with its Victorian storefronts, offers a very good museum on the history of the town, from mining silver to capitalizing on the “white gold” of snow.  Besides being a ski resort, Park City is also the home of the largest film festival in the US, the Sundance Festival.  With all this activity, the town possesses several good restaurants, interesting shopping, and art galleries.  The summer is a time of many music festivals in the area.

Park City is only 33 miles from the capital of Utah, Salt Lake City.  A day in Salt Lake City presents many options. For history buffs, museums tell the story of the settling of the city by the Mormons, whose church is known officially as the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints (the LDS Church).  This is the largest religious denomination originally founded in the United States.  Some LDS buildings are not open to visitors, but there are tours to see the Tabernacle Choir, for example.  The LDS Church is also a world leader in genealogy, and the Family History Museum is open to public, where you can trace your ancestors.  As the state capital, Salt Lake City has the State Capitol Building, and it also has the Fort Douglas Military Museum, with various armored vehicles that we would recognize.  Salt Lake City has universities, museums, and shopping, so there is something to interest everyone here, just a short drive from Park City.

Finally, beyond the towns and cities, the State of Utah offers spectacular scenery, so a road trip through Utah should be on the “bucket list.”  If you land in Las Vegas, Nevada, you can then rent a car and travel northeast into Utah to see Utah’s five National Parks, going from west to east: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches, and then travel north to Salt Lake City.  So let’s all meet up in this gorgeous part of the country for our mini-reunion!
